How to Get Around Nassau with Kids

Exploring Nassau is easy, and there are several options to suit your family’s needs and preferences. Let’s take a closer look at your choices to make your travel experience in this vibrant city as smooth as possible

Walk or Bike Your Way Around!

One of the most accessible ways to explore Nassau is on foot or by bicycle. The city’s downtown area is pedestrian-friendly, with sidewalks, crosswalks, and well-maintained streets.

Walking through the colorful streets of Nassau allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture, discover historical landmarks, and enjoy shopping and dining experiences. Many resorts also offer bike rentals, which can be a fun way for families to explore the nearby areas.

Taxis and Cabs

Taxis are a convenient and popular mode of transportation in Nassau. They are readily available at the airport, cruise ports, and throughout the city, or through online booking apps such as Uber.

Nassau’s taxis are known for their distinctive appearance, with a bright yellow color and taxi license numbers. While you’re picking a local cab, it’s important to confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey, as rates are regulated by the government.

Taxis are an excellent choice for quick trips to attractions, beaches, and dining spots, making them flexible, and a much more private option for getting around Nassau with your family.

If you plan to venture beyond Nassau and explore more remote areas of New Providence Island, renting a car is your ticket to privacy and convenience. However, it’s important to be aware that traffic and road conditions in Nassau are maybe a little different (for instance, you need to drive on the left side of the road) from what you’re accustomed to.

Rental car agencies are available at the airport and in downtown Nassau, and you’ll need a valid driver’s license and a good understanding of local road rules.

Public Transportation

The public bus system is a budget-friendly way to get around the city and nearby areas. Just look for the bright blue and white buses.

While they cover various routes, the service might not be frequent enough for tourists. All in all, it’s a good choice if you want an authentic local experience.

Water Taxis

Because Nassau hugs the coast, water taxis offer a one-of-a-kind and picturesque way to hop between Nassau and its island neighbors, like Paradise Island and other nearby cays. Water taxis provide a view of Nassau’s skyline and harbor and are often used by tourists on Paradise Island to access Nassau’s downtown.

It’s a convenient way to experience the beauty of the Bahamas from the water and the kids are sure to love the commute.

Air Travel and Yachts

If you’re up for a little splurge, you can take domestic flights from Nassau’s airport to explore other Bahamian islands. This lets you see the diverse landscapes and cultures of the entire archipelago from above.

Nassau is also a popular spot for cruise ships, making it easy to explore the downtown area and nearby attractions if you’re arriving by sea. And if you happen to have your yacht or go for charter services, Nassau is your gateway to discovering the beauty of the Bahamas archipelago – pristine waters, hidden islands, and endless adventures await just beyond the shore.

Paradise Island

Paradise Island lives up to its name, offering beautiful beaches, luxurious resorts, and endless entertainment. This sought-after destination is just a stone’s throw from Nassau, accessible via two bridges.

Start your adventure on the stunning beaches. Cabbage Beach, the star attraction, stretches over two miles along the northern shore, offering soft sands and crystal-clear waters. It’s conveniently close to many island resorts, including Atlantis Paradise Island.

Atlantis Hotel Nassau Bahamas

Speaking of Atlantis, it’s a sprawling resort complex with a casino, water park, marine habitat, and more. The Ocean Club Golf Course is perfect for a relaxed round of golf with an ocean view.

For a quieter experience, explore Pirates Cove Beach, Garden of the Groves, or Ocean Club Beach. Keep in mind that some beaches are privately owned by nearby resorts.

The show-stealer at Paradise Island is unquestionably Atlantis. Atlantis is home to impressive marine habitats, like The Dig, which is an archaeological-themed aquarium.

As you walk through the underground maze of tunnels you’ll catch all kinds of marine animals, from majestic sharks and rays to exotic fish.

For the little ones eager to make some fin-tastic friends, Dolphin Cay is the place to be, offering a variety of interactive activities suitable for kids of all ages. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, there are opportunities to snorkel or scuba dive amidst the underwater ruins of Atlantis.

Your Atlantis adventure wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Aquaventure Water Park, one of the most elaborate and thrilling water parks on the planet. Get ready for an adrenaline rush with jaw-dropping water slides like the Mayan Temple, where you can literally slide through a shark tank.

As the sun sets, Paradise Island comes alive with dining, shopping, and live entertainment options. It’s an all-day adventure for the whole family! For those family snaps and video memories, learn all about flying a drone in the Bahamas.

Junkanoo Beach

When you’re traveling with kids, you want things to be easy. Junkanoo Beach is just that – super convenient.

It’s very close to downtown Nassau, so it’s perfect for folks coming off cruise ships or locals looking for a relaxing spot. Whether you fancy a quick ocean dip on a cruise stop or a full day at the beach, Junkanoo Beach has got you covered.

This beach is on the north coast of New Providence Island, and it’s all about those classic Bahamian beach vibes. Think soft, powdery sand that stretches for miles – the kind of place you’d want in your vacation photos.

Now, why’s it called Junkanoo Beach? Well, that’s because of the famous Junkanoo Festival, a big deal in the Bahamas.

Even when the festival’s not happening, you can still catch some of that lively spirit. Local vendors set up shop, selling tasty Bahamian treats like conch salad, fried fish, and coconut water. And as you enjoy the food, there’s often reggae and calypso music in the air, adding to the good vibes.

Blue Lagoon Island

When you picture the ultimate island escape – clear blue waters, a peaceful setting, and zero stress – that’s Blue Lagoon Island. It’s a short boat ride from Nassau and is sometimes called “Salt Cay.” This island is easy to reach, whether you’re a tourist or a local. You can hop on a ferry or water taxi from Nassau’s Paradise Island Ferry Terminal.

During your cruise adventures, you can sign up for activities like swimming with dolphins. It’s a blast! The crew is super friendly, and the trainers are happy to teach you and share some laughs.

Plus, they make sure the dolphins are well taken care of. After hanging out with these amazing creatures, you can kick back with some tasty cocktails in the sun.

If you’re into nature, there are guided nature walks and cool presentations about the island’s plants and animals. It’s a hands-on way for families to connect with nature and take a break from the daily hustle and bustle.

Whether you’re up for an adventure or a learning experience, Blue Lagoon Island offers a memorable journey into the heart of The Bahamas.
